So he saw that King David would be born and die on one day, on the same day that he was born. He was very sad [and] said, 'Master of the Universe, is this King David really to be born and to die straight away? Why? The poor thing! Give him a bit of life!' He said, 'I cannot help him like that. I have created it thus and it must be so. If you wish to help him, help him!' He said, 'I will help him. From my life I will give him seventy years.' He said, 'Don't regret it [later], Adam. You have said it and you cannot go back on your word later.' He said, 'No, I accept that. This time, just for him, I will allow him to live. I will give him seventy years.' The Midrash says that when Adam reached nine-hundred and thirty years and he was to die, for in seventy years he would have reached a thousand (but he had given seventy to King David) he regretted it. He said, 'O Master of the Universe, I want to live for a thousand years!' He said, 'No, do as you have said. When one has given a present, taking it back is not allowed. It is forbidden for one to take [it] back. You gave a present [and] afterwards you must keep your promise. Therefore Adam did not live for a thousand years but rather for nine-hundred and thirty years. And [then] he died. Then there were [other] generations which arose, after this [many] people were born. And very slowly the world developed, grew older.

Translation:

He [i.e. Adam] was supposed to live for a thousand years, but one day He showed him all the generations of the world that would exist, he showed him the whole world.  So he saw that King David would be born and die on one day, on the same day that he was born.  He was very sad [and] said, 'Master of the Universe, is this King David really to be born and to die straight away?  Why?  The poor thing!  Give him a bit of life!'
