There was a Jew, and a Jew is usually clever. What did he do? Whatever money he had he put in the saddlebag, hid it in his mule’s saddlebag. And one day the mule got lost. It got lost, and he started searching here and there, but did not find the mule. He vowed to the Almighty, that [if] he found his mule along with the saddlebag, he would give [sell] it for one dinar, and give that dinar to the needy.

What did he do? He roamed and roamed and roamed in the mountains, [until] he found it. He found it and brought it, took the saddlebag, took his money and put it in his pockets, and went to the market, taking the mule to the market. What did he do? On his way he killed a rat and tied it to the mule’s tail. A black rat. He tied it to the mule’s tail. A black rat [tied] to the mule’s tail.

Then he went to the market and started calling “Hey! Who will buy the mule for one dinar, but the rat for one hundred dinars?” People looked, saying “What would we do with the rat for one hundred dinars? We won’t buy it.” The mule was not sold, and the rat remained on the mule’s tail. He came home and said to the Almighty “I [have] kept my vow, [but] no-one bought the mule. What can I do?”
